Apple prefaced yesterday's launch of the third generation iPad with a minor update to a product that makes up a much smaller proportion of the company's sales. The Apple TV still sports the same external design and price point, but with an overhauled interface and crucially, the ability to playback videos at 1080p high-definition resolution. For current owners of the Apple TV and those who are accustomed to buying content from iTunes, the new device is a worthy purchase. Many of you will already know all about Apple’s iCloud, its wonderful sync features and the fact that it allows you to find your iDevice and access mail, your calendar and even documents from any standard web browser. Then again I regularly encounter iPad and iPhone owners who have yet to update their devices to take advantage of the many new features.
Maybe it didn't seem like it, but today's new iPad introduction was Apple's most important event of the year. Sure, the iPhone is still a bigger business for Apple, and probably will be for a while. But the iPhone is just Apple's small sliver of the giant phone market. The iPad, meanwhile, is a green field - a totally new market that Apple is building and defining. And so far, it has it almost to itself. It's the future of Apple and potentially the future of the personal computer. That's a rare and tremendous opportunity....
