I asked a dozen or so of my fellow bloggers and branding enthusiasts to answer the question: “What would you call personal branding if you could give it an alternate name”? Here are their replies, , all of which sound a lot less painful than personal branding!

I uploaded my first PPT reume 4 months ago to Slideshare and was excited to see so many downloads and comments here. My friend Minmin got inspiration from my ppt and did her own. It was great to know that both of ours are selected into Spotlight section here. 4 months past and my life changed a little. Now I updated a new version of the resume and hope you will like it as well.

Build your personal brand around a single word - You need to select a word you can own and then focus your marketing around that. One great soundbite from the event was "there is no 'and' in brand." Guy astutely pointed out, however, there is a "bra" in brand. Not sure what to do what that, but maybe you'll come up with something.

Thus personal brand propagators seek to bulwark a business model destined to fail. What people need to do is build substantive value for stakeholders that will deliver return on investment for time or money. If personal brands are infused in this value, all the better, but please don’t tell me its the quintessential focus of social media marketing.

It's easy to be jealous of someone who glows so much, but hard to hate them if they're genuinely nice, and even easier to get to know them and understand that they can — and are often willing to — amplify your awesome if you give them a chance. Especially if you're a budding personality superstar.

The problem with many organizations is that they don't value personal brand builders enough. Often in the corporate world, as an employee raises their personal brand they are more likely to be treated with skepticism. Called self-promoters (or worse), these growing superstars are often alienated and driven out of organizations by managers or colleagues that feel threatened by them.

Is personal branding becoming a catchphrase to describe those who are using social media as a drip pan for their overflowing egos or is it just misunderstood? As someone who has spent considerable time building a personal brand while working at a large company, this is a question I have struggled with before and I believe it comes through to six main assumptions (some truth and some fiction):

Personal branding is the process whereby people and their careers are marked as brands.[1] While previous self-help management techniques were about self-improvement, the personal branding concept suggests instead that success comes from self-packaging.[1] The process is further defined as the creation of an asset that pertains to a particular person or individual; this includes but is not limited to the body, clothing, physical appearance and areas of knowledge, leading to a uniquely distinguishable, and ideally memorable, impression.[citation needed] The term is thought to have been first used and discussed in a 1997 article by Tom Peters.[citation needed]
Personal branding often involves the application of one's name to various products. For example, the celebrity real-estate mogul Donald Trump uses his last name extensively on his buildings and on the products he endorses (e.g. Trump Steaks).
Personal branding, self-positioning and all individual branding by whatever name, was first introduced in 1937 in the book Think and Grow Rich[citation needed] by Napoleon Hill. The idea surfaced later in the 1981 book Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, by Al Ries and Jack Trout.[2] More specifically in "Chapter 23. Positioning Yourself and Your Career - You can benefit by using positioning strategy to advance your own career. Key principle: Don’t try to do everything yourself. Find a horse to ride".
The term is thought to have been first used and discussed in an 1997 article by Tom Peters.
