In fact, you can help whether or not you’re in Portland. Case in point: Rosetta Thurman, a nonprofit leader, writer, speaker, professor and leadership development consultant (I’m sure I missed something there, but let’s just say she’s accomplished) posted a great recap about how to help. Rather than trying to come up with new ways to say what she did so well, please read on for her eloquent and moving call to action:

Habitat for Humanity Int’l Responds to Immediate Need in Haiti
The 7.0 earthquake and strong aftershocks that struck near Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, January 12 have added yet another dimension to the humanitarian crisis and poverty conditions faced by over 80% of Haitians. According to Reuters, the quake hit at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles, just ten miles from the capital city. A hospital and several schools on the island are reported to have collapsed, according to regional news sources. The local authorities have declared the country in a state of emergency. The number of affected persons is unknown. However, Haiti’s ambassador to the U.S. has called the quake a “catastrophe of major proportions.”

Portlanders are rallying to help Haiti any way they can after Tuesday’s devastating 7.0 earthquake, which was centered about 16 miles from the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The International Red Cross stated that 3 million people have been affected by the quake, and new organizations are reporting the probability of more than 100,000 deaths.
As rescue workers struggle to clear the rubble and aid the injured in Haiti, Portland shops and businesses also are doing everything they can to help – from donating portions of their proceeds to Twittering and sharing easy ways to donate funds. If you’re also eager to get involved, here’s a look at ways Portlander’s can help Haiti’s earthquake relief effort:
Text relief fast – If you text the word “HAITI” to the number 90999 an instant donation of $10 will go to the Red Cross and be charged to your cell phone bill. You can also text “YELE” to the number 501501 for a donation of $5 to benefit Yele Haiti.
MercyCorps – Portland-based relief agency MercyCorps makes it easy to donate online here. Learn more about all the ways MercyCorps is helping Haiti and others in need www.mercycorps.org.

Blues for Haiti, Vol. 1
Cramming this annoncement in at the very last minute to just give a ‘Heads Up’ for an event that I am hoping ALL who read will try to attend…
Friends are a good thing, and I’m lucky to have a few, who, on EXTREMELY short notice, are able and willing to give their time and talent to draw as big and GENEROUS a crowd of music lovers as is possible given such short notice…
I am talking about Haiti, and trying to do something, as quickly as feasible, to help in anyway we can.
On SUNDAY, JANUARY 31st, at THE REFECTORY (122nd and Halsey), my friend Kevin Selfe has kindly agreed to hand over his weekly jam, and help us put together a show all for the benefit of Haiti, and give ALL proceeds to Mercy Corps…Every dime and penny you, dear Music Lover, can spare will go to helping the victims of this horrific, tragic event.

Haiti needs us at this critical moment. My prayer is that God will unleash people and their resources like never before to offer eternal hope & healing to Haiti. Also, I'm asking God to equip adults with words of wisdom as they explain this tradegy to children and demonstrate acts of compassion as Jesus would. Just think, as they hear our prayers...
