No city in the U.S. is as ready as Portland to launch a citywide or scaled testbed for ultra high speed open platform broadband. Portland has the history, broad community support, willing businesses, committed local government, and cost-effective, year-round construction metrics. We are poised to take immediate steps to collaborate with Google’s visionary ultra high-speed broadband project on any agreeable scale from 50,000 to 500,000.

More than 1,000 US cities asked Google to bless them with its 1Gbps fiber testbed, but only a few will succeed. What happens to all that grassroots excitement over big broadband in the towns that miss out? A new group encourages communities to take charge of their broadband destiny.

A small group of people have banded together to lobby Google to consider Portland, Oregon as the perfect spot to roll out their Google Fiber for Communities experiment. Google is planning to design and build one of the fastest experimental broadband networks in the world, delivering over 1 gigabit per second fiber-to-the-home connetions at a competative price for up to 500,000 homes.

All the stuff you need to know...

Since we announced our plans to build experimental, ultra high-speed broadband networks, the response from communities and individuals has been tremendous and creative. With just a few hours left before our submission deadline, we've received more than 600 community responses to our request for information (RFI), and more than 190,000 responses from individuals (we'll post an update with the final numbers later tonight). We've seen cities rename themselves, great YouTube videos, public rallies and hundreds of grassroots Facebook groups come to life, all with the goal of bringing ultra high-speed broadband to their communities.

Google is planning to launch an ultra-high speed Internet service for one or more trial cities in the United States. This Internet service will be very fast - about 100 times faster than we currently have access to.

This group is made for those who have been disappointed with the slow and closed system ISPs currently follow. Google has announced plans to build a fiber network that would give us internet speeds of up to 1gb/sec. Google is currently taking applications and votes for where to build the first network. We need to convince them Portland is THE place!

Portland commissioners voted unanimously (5-0) this morning to back the city's pitch for Google's fiber project.

Portland's city council votes at 10:30 tomorrow morning on a resolution endorsing the city's quest to land Google's fiber project.
