Throughout the past few years one of the oldest and most successful marketing tactics has reemerged bigger and stronger than ever. Many moons ago people relied on conversations with neighbors, friends, family members and respected community members before making a purchase. As mass marketing emerged to spin trust through the eyes of advertisers, speciality reviewing companies such as Consumer Reports became a means for consumers to verify the advertising claims against the products actual performance. These types of great technical insights and well-researched analysis still bear a lot of weight within the buying process. Today at a special event at its headquarters in Palo Alto, California, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has taken the stage to unveil some key new announcements (you can find our live notes and a live stream right here). One of the first things Zuckerberg announced: Facebook has observed the the rate that its users are sharing is increasing at an exponential rate.
He explains that if you look at any Facebook user, on average, the amount they share today is twice what they shared a year ago — and in one year they'll probably be sharing twice as much as they are today. It's an important trend, and it's one that Zuckerberg says probably applies to the internet at large rather than just Facebook. But a lot of it is happening on the social network — users are now sharing 4 billion 'things' on Facebook every day.

We’ve been talking at Hitwise for a very long time about the benefits of social media and how Facebook in particular is becoming critical to the success of multi-channel marketing. We are constantly asked: “What’s the ROI with advertising on Facebook?”and until now that has always been a difficult question to qualify precisely. Leveraging our unique data sets we now have an answer: for retailers, each new fan acquired on Facebook is worth 20 additional visits to your website over the course of a year.
I’ve blogged on many occasions on just how massive Facebook is online but it is always worth reiterating some of the big “wow-factor” stats which highlight Facebook’s reach and influence online. Facebook is the second most visited website in the UK after Google and is now the second biggest source of traffic to other websites as well. 1 in every 6 page views from UK Internet users goes to a Facebook page, and 20 million hours are spent on the website every day from UK users alone.
What is the best time to share content on social networks for maximum exposure? Should you post first thing in the morning? During lunch? A new infographic from KISSmetrics answers these questions and more with a new infographic called ‘The Science of Social Timing.’

Banner Ads. They first started in 1994 and are therefore almost as old as the Web itself. They were very effective back then, with the original ad garnering a 78% click-through rate (CTR)! I guess from there we had nowhere to go but down.
Nowadays banner ads get on average 0.2% CTR meaning for every 1,000 ads that are served up only 2 people click on them. And as Jon Steinberg of Buzzfeed points out, the CTRs for social media banner ads are just 0.08%. Holy Shiitake!
A study released by Massachusetts-based application analytics firm Localytics today confirms my suspicion that we both love -- and are quickly bored by -- our mobile applications. And, perhaps, that studies will confirm just about anything.
In part 1 of its study, Localytics analyzed thousands of Android, iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 apps. Using its realtime app analytics service, they found that, while most smartphone users are willing to try new apps (as evidenced by the 10 billion downloads from the iTunes store), 26 percent of the time they download an app, use it once, never to use it again.

This article presents a network analysis of word-of-mouth referral behavior in a natural environment. The relational properties of tie strength and homophily were employed to examine referral behavior at micro and macro levels of inquiry. The study demonstrates different roles played by weak and strong social ties. At the macro level, weak ties displayed an important bridging function, allowing information to travel from one distinct subgroup of referral actors to another subgroup in the broader social system. At the micro level, strong and homophilous ties were more likely to be activated for the flow of referral information. Strong ties were also perceived as more influential than weak ties, and they were more likely to be utilized as sources of information for related goods.JSTOR: The Journal of Consumer Research, Vol. 14, No. 3 (Dec., 1987), pp. 350-362
