North Bank Community Project began in 2002, when founding members Maya Jones, Rebecca Seymour, and Greg Lueck came up with the idea of creating an artists’ community in Downtown Vancouver. The original vision was to select a group of talented local artists and offer them affordable studio space and a gallery, where they could create and exhibit their bodies of work. Providing educational opportunities, professional development, and community outreach were also fundamental underpinnings of the concept of North Bank.
Greg and Rebecca soon found North Bank’s home at 1005 Main Street, in the heart of Downtown Vancouver. The space required a massive renovation, which was paid for by a grant and a generous donation from a local patron. Opening its doors in October 2003, North Bank Artists Gallery was quickly recognized as a cultural fixture and part of Downtown revitalization.
Now celebrating its 10 year anniversary, North Bank reflects on the dozens of thoughtful, beautiful, engaging, and at times provocative shows hung over the years. Since it is a non-profit organization supported by members and patrons, North Bank can be brave in its selection of artists to represent and art to exhibit. Committed to quality of art as well as quality of thought put into the art, North Bank continues to honor the founders’ dream of having an artistic community with a high level of integrity.
New shows are hung monthly and artists receptions are on First Fridays, when all Downtown galleries are open from 5-9pm. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday, 11:30-4:30. Admission is always free.
