In what used to be North America, Panem is a land in poverty, struggling for survival, while the Capitol lives lavishly, forcing each of the 12 districts they rule over to send two Tributes each year to fight to the death: the Huger Games. The citizens of the Capitol watch the nationally televised games with pleasure while the Tributes with with fear and anticipation of their loved ones not returning home. In District 12, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are the Tributes entering the games, and as they progress, viewers take a liking to the pair. Gamemakers in the Capitol feed on the attention Peeta and Katniss gain, using it the pair as a way to make money and keep viewers up. As the games progress, Katniss and Peeta realize what is happening and decide to work together, and they're successful. At the end of the games, it comes down to just the two of them, but there can only be one victor. The Capitol is pushing for one of them to die, there has never been a double Victor and they don't plan on that changing. For the sake of the trilogy, however, the pair finds a way to save themselves, together, so that they both will go home, thus planting the seed for the revolution that will spark up in later books.
