Why the Freemium Model Doesn't Work
If you’re not charging for your product, then your users are the product. This forces you to focus on two unrelated efforts: growing your user base and figuring out how to monetize it. There are many benefits to having free users and focusing on hyper growth. But the decision to go the freemium route should be based on math specific to your business — not a pricing philosophy. Because the reality is, the freemium model doesn't work for the majority of companies who try it.

6 Ways to Get the Most Out of Freemium for Your Small Business
Many freemium services offer extra features in exchange for social referrals. If you're in need of more firepower for a favorite tool, then your best bet could be to bring out the megaphone and start broadcasting.
Consider Dropbox, the much-raved about cloud service that offers a nice 2GB of free space for everyone. But, the more enterprising (and friend-rich) can gain a 500MB increase in storage for a successful referral to Dropbox, all the way up to a sizable 18GB. If you're the enterprising sort with enough pluck to refer your contacts to the service, you could have plenty of cloud to build your business on.

To Freemium or not to Freemium? " Nickpoint
Its not an easy decision. Free means lots of users but no revenues (or a little from Ad’s) but the potential of something much bigger if you hit on that killer app. A 30-day free trial only option will result in real users who demand a high value proposition. At least then you will know if your app can be monetised. The Freemium model offers a half way house to gain traction and the opportunity to convert some users, which is particularly helpful during the early startup days. However Freemium is full of pitfalls if executed poorly.
