Ella Enchanted is a fantasy fiction novel that has won many awards, including the Newberry Honor. When Ella is born, a fairy decides to cast an obedience spell onto Ella, making it so she must do what she is told. The fairy, Lucinda, thought she was giving Ella a gift. However, this was very far from a gift, it was a curse. Since the day she was born, Ella had to do everything she was told. Her mom and fairy godmother were the only ones that knew about this curse. Ella was very close with her mother and her mother helped her maintain the curse, but when she was very young, her mother passed away. Ella’s father traveled a lot and wasn’t a very big part of her life. He also didn’t know about the curse. After Ella’s mother passed, Ella’s father remarried and she now had two evil stepsisters. Since she was under this curse, Ella was forced to do some awful things that her stepsisters commanded her to do.
Ella didn’t have a lot of people that were very close to her that she could trust, until she met the Prince Char. Ella and Prince Char got along very well from the day they met and fell in-love. However, there was one thing holding Ella back from marrying the Prince, the curse. She was determined to get rid of the curse before she could marry the Prince. Through her power and determination, Ella eventually figures out how she could get rid of the curse for good.
I thought this book was very interesting to read and I think that it’s a great novel for young adults. Many teens have already heard of the story Cinderella, so this book provides an interesting retelling of that popular story. This book included a lot of action and adventure, which is very appealing to young adults. Throughout this novel, Ella demonstrates strength and independence. I think that’s a great thing for young readers to see as well. She was very determined to break the curse, and she didn’t stop until she reached her goal.
