The hot air balloon, the first flying machine to successfully carry a human being, was invented in 1783 by two brothers, Joseph and Etienne de Montgolfier. After an initial 'test-run' in June 1783, with no passengers aboard, the two French brothers placed a rooster, a duck and a sheep aboard their invention on September 19th, 1783.
