Kratom, which is known by its scientific name [Mitragyna Speciosa], is native of south East Asia. It grows in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.
Kratom is a member of Rubiaceae family and the name is common in Thailand. Other members in this family include gardenia and coffee.
You can consume the leaves of kratom by drying and smoking, chewing, tablets, capsules, extract, or you boil them inside tea.
This plant has unique effects. In very low doses, it will act as an anti-depressant and stimulate your body, but in very high doses, it has very euphoric effects.
The common uses of kratom are pain relief and those who are withdrawing from heroin and cocaine use it. Others use it to stimulate muscles, and as a stress reliever.
Traditionally, the leaves of kratom have been in use for many years in Malaysia and Thailand. Workers in these two countries were using kratom to increase stamina, energy, and reduce fatigue.
However, many of the countries in South East Asia have outlawed kratom.
In the US, some of the users use it as an alternative for muscle pain, to treat opiate addicts, and diarrhea. Patients who suffer from PTSD have been reporting improvements in their general health.
However, the advantages of kratom have not been ascertained using clinical methods.
DEA and kratom
This drug has been on the DEA watch list for many years. The DEA did not approve of its usage and it was viewed in the class with other opiates including heroin and cocaine.
In 2016, the DEA put it in the same class as other controlled substances. It has many ingredients, but there are two that are the primary ones, 7- hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine.
However, they were not successful as advocates, researchers, members of congress and the users of Kratom protested this move.
The DEA had to pull back and involve the public in getting comments about kratom. Researchers too had their input.
